OLIVE INTELLIGENT TRAP
Intelligent monitoring of olive groves

The InOlive consortium led by the company Geodouro and INESC TEC, together with the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança and the producers’ association APPITAD, developed the InOlive project – “Intelligent Monitoring for the Prevention of Pests and Diseases in Olive Groves”. It was an R&D project in co-promotion that aimed to develop an intelligent monitoring solution for preventing pests and diseases in Olival. This solution includes traps with advanced sensing, georeferencing and image acquisition technologies using computer vision and an intelligent management and monitoring system for pests and disease prevention. The main objective of the InOlive solution is to help determine quickly, precisely and economically the need and the appropriate moment to intervene in the fight against pests and diseases in olive groves, thus minimizing the use of pesticides.

INESCTEC’s role focused on the research and development of the intelligent trap, which is composed of two main components: a physical component, that is, the robotic structure, and the automatic pest detection module from images using deep learning techniques. The trap incorporates sensors that allow users to monitor threats autonomously and simultaneously – such as olive moth, olive fly or olive anthracnose, and climatic variables. It is essential because climate change causes an increase in pests and diseases in olive groves, causing losses, increased production costs and an impact on product quality.

The technological solutions are already working in the various olive groves in the Mirandela region selected for the demonstration pilot. The consortium is ambitious to advance further in the project’s development. It seeks to optimize and transform the solutions into products suitable for other territories and test their use in other cultures. The InOlive project was co-financed by EU/ERDF NORTH 2020 funds for 304 thousand euros and began in September 2021.

We supported the application of this Intelligent Monitoring of Olive Groves project to the European funds for Portugal 2020, and we also carried out an in-depth study on intelligent technological traps available on the international market to induce greater competitiveness in developing the InOlive solution.
