COTEC Connect 4.0

A Strategic Contribution to Industry 4.0

As part of COTEC Portugal’s ambitious Connect 4.0 project, WellAdvisedco collaborated with Deloitte on a crucial component of the study: developing Monitoring Indicators for the characterization of the 4.0 market.

The Challenge

COTEC needed a robust framework to assess and monitor the evolution of Industry 4.0 in Portugal, focusing on SMEs. The goal was to create a set of indicators that would allow Portuguese companies to benchmark their position and progress in the context of digital transformation.

Our Approach

Our methodology was based on three fundamental pillars of international trends. We selected organizations that had developed Industry 4.0 monitoring indicators and are recognized as international trends to follow, and we study them to apply to the national reality:

  1. Smart Industry Readiness Index (SIRI): A systematic and comprehensive assessment framework based on quantitative international benchmarks and qualitative data. Developed by NCIT WEF EDB Singapore, it provides a solid foundation for quantitative evaluation.
  2. Advanced Technologies for Industry (ATI): A European Commission initiative that systematically analyzes and monitors the adoption status of advanced technologies by the EU industry, providing valuable insights into technological adoption in the European context.
  3. Plattform Industrie 4.0 (PI 4.0): The organization that promotes digital transformation in the German manufacturing industry and has consolidated a leading role in Germany’s Industry 4.0, establishing international standards and best practices.

The Solution

We created an indicator system structured around five key dimensions:

  • Organizational Resilience: Assessment of companies’ adaptive capacity
  • Infrastructure System: Analysis of installed technological base
  • Production System: Measurement of process efficiency and automation
  • Data Transformation: Assessment of data management and analysis capabilities
  • Digital Technology: Monitoring of 4.0 technology adoption

Results and Impact

The project delivered:

  • Development of 23 critical assessment aspects
  • Creation of 43 specific monitoring indicators
  • Framework adaptable to each SME’s specific needs
  • Self-assessment system for companies

The indicator system is ready for real-world testing with a pilot group of Portuguese SMEs. This validation phase will allow for refinement and adjustment of the indicators, ensuring their relevance and applicability in the national context.

Our contribution to this comprehensive project represents an important step in the digital transformation of the Portuguese industry, helping to provide SMEs with precise tools to measure and guide their progress in the Industry 4.0 era.
